The 3G iPhone from Apple is apparently almost here, according to a press release from Apple today. Touted as 'twice the phone at half the price', it is slated for release shortly. Sporting more memory and faster internet speed, it will finally catch up with other 3G phones like the HTC Touch that have been out since late 2006.
It will continue to be available exclusively in the USA through ATT, and Rogers is planning to be the exclusive distributor in Canada.

I was able to use an old analog phone hooked up to my Dell Laptop (with a special modem) and roam all through the US in our motorhome with their roaming partner (Sprint) at a horrific monthly cost, at the astounding data rate of 4800 bps. You could actually use 9600 bps too, but it rarely worked and often dropped connections higher than 4800 bps, so I stuck to the slower speed most of the time.

We got off the plane in Vegas and I sat down in the airport to check my mail. I hooked it up and discovered there was no service. I spent the next 4 days in expensive hotels (needed a land line to connect), running up big phone bills, talking to both Rogers and ATT (their roaming partner), getting nowhere (nobody seemed to have a clue what I was talking about). Our trip was knocked way off schedule and waay off budget.

I found that we could travel with our internet satellite dish to our data warehouse in San Diego without losing the internet signal. Outside of that radius, we would have moved out of our spot beam coverage and couldn't use it. I was happy: it was much faster than cell, considerably less expensive, and worked almost everywhere. The downside was that it took longer to set up, but it wasn't that much of a problem. We still used cell to monitor our email as we traveled down the highway, then we would deploy the dish at the end of the day when we set up camp.

I bought the HTC TyTn touch screen phone and found that it was a very nice unit for use in Mexico because it has WiFi and also allows me to run Spanish translation software (it will actually pronounce words and phrases for you). My newer phone, the HTC Touch, has all the good features of this phone, and they fixed everything that was wrong with it.
